Bakgat 3

Here is a couple of pics for my latest project. We just finished filming Bakgat 3, it was a epic month long shoot which involved a lot of Steadicam work.

I had to use  different techniques and pushed my Steadicam to its full potential. This involved slow technical moves as well as big expansive moves during filming. I particularly  enjoyed the rugby scenes where at certain times we had to rig my Steadicam onto my bakkie to create fast flowing tracking shots in order to capture the speed of a rugby game.

It was grueling work especial our night shots where call time was 17h00 and we had to work right through the night until 5 the next morning.

In the end, as always, it is rewarding to view your shots and see what you and your team has created...

Challenging Man and Machine

Baboons Pass Lesotho....

Bobbejaan's pass is arguably 1 of the most extreme mountain passes in Southern Africa.  The road slowly ascents to 9000f above sea-level and transforms from a dirt road into a donkey track! The last 6kms is nearly impassible as the track winds through the Lesotho mountains.

We took Foton's new double-cab bakkie up this pass, a feat that is no walk in the park.
Personally I did not think a Chinese made bakkie would survive Bobbejaan's Pass, but remarkably with a couple of bumps, bruises and cut tyres these bakkies conquered the unconquerable...

Durban Rally championship 2012

This is for all you petrol-heads or just the people out there who like speed!!

I filmed the first leg of the South African National rally championship in Durban.
I must say it is quite an experience seeing how quick these supercharged cars fly through the sugarcane plantations of KZN.
Sometimes it felt like a scene from Hunter S. Thompson's book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas as the dust clouds blew over me.

After dodging dust, rocks and speeding cars it was a cool thing to see and I can't wait for the 2nd leg!

“So we shall let the reader answer this question for himself: who is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?”

SkyRoomLive

This was my 2nd time filming SkyRooomLive. Lindiwe Suttle was the performing artist.

What makes the project sooooo good is the location. Jo'burg is almost a character on her own!

Here is some pics of her....enjoy...

SkyRoomLive

Awesome location and awesome music equals SkyRoomLive!

What is SkyRoomLive?

It is an exciting concept where top SA bands perform on the roof of a Johannesburg skyscraper and the show is broadcast live over the internet.

The location is what really gives an edge to this production.

We had a lot of toys for this production, I was on Steadicam, we had a dolly on tracks and a jib on tracks. This all meant the the show had a cool flowing feel to it.

Check out some of the photos......

Feet vs Tar

The Cosmos road race is regarded as one of the premier warm-up races for the Comrades Marathon.

This weekend I were towed behind a quad-bike just so I can keep up with these supreme athletes.
I were out with my Steadicam rig to film the action on the road!!

The race consists of three smaller races, a 42, 21 and 10km which the athletes must complete.
The overall distance is a grueling 73kms, something only the fittest of fit can complete.
As a runner myself, I were amazed @ the speed and endurance the front runners had, completing the race in time of 3h59min

Jet-ski racing

Speed, Sound and Sun!!!

The quite town off Secunda was transformed into a speed and sound fest as the South African jet-ski champs descended towards it's peaceful shores.
There was a great vibe on the waters of mine-shaft 5 as the jet-ski fraternity battled it out to see who would be king of the water!

We were down there to film the riders with their powerful machines racing around a set course to determine who would be the champion!

I were there with my Steadicam running up and down on the water's edge capturing these impressive machines in action.
