IdolsSA and the Steadicam dance

Season X of South African Idols are drawing to a close. This post has nothing to do with any of the Idols contestants or their performance, but is just a little insight on how to dance with a Steadicam alongside the Idols contestants.

The biggest challenge for a Steadicam operator on a live music show is timing. The nature of how each Steadicam shot is constructed for this type of show has everything to do with the rhythm of each song and the action of the performer. To get on the the stage, hit my marks and get off the stage without ending in another camera's shot was what I needed to do for the past couple of months. This seems easy enough, but to hit every mark on the right beat is an enormous challenge.

Every move-and-turn requires precision foot work, so that I can maneuver the camera into the right position at the right time. All this fancy foot-work, coupled with the moves around, sideways, in-front of the contestants looks like I am dancing along with the contestants on each song.

All of this above is how you do a Steadicam dance to the beat of popular music.
